Letter writer urges support for Jerry Miller for commissioner
Editor, News Watchman,
“These are the times that try men’s souls: The summer soldier and sunhine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country, but he that can stand it now, deserves the love of man and woman.”
These were the opening words in the first of a series of pamphlets written by Thomas Paine during the American Revolution which he titled “The American Crisis.” Paine signed each pamphlet simply “Common Sense.”
Even though these words were written 242 years ago, I am sure you will agree with me, the words penned by Thomas Paine are painfully appropriate today and that is why I will be voting for Jerry Miller for Pike County Commissioner.
I am in a unique position to know Jerry as I was both his teacher and coach at Waverly High School. We all know the immense issues and challenges facing the citizens of Pike County. Most people would shrink and fade away from such issues and challenges but not Jerry. He is no summer soldier, no sunshine patriot. Jerry is willing to take them on because he knows they are hard. Jerry will bring integrity, an unmatched work ethic, honesty, a willingness to listen, and a toughness to make difficult decisions to the commissioner’s office. I know Jerry’s heart and I know if the citizens of Pike County elect him as commissioner, he will use his position to touch and improve the lives of all who live in Pike County.
We live in times of vile verbiage, screaming incoherent voices, a lack of civility unmatched in my lifetime, and far too much heavy prose. There are not enough clear poignant voices and empowering poetry or verse. William Shakespeare wrote these words in “Julius Caesar”:
“There is a tide in the affairs of men.
Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyages of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.
On such a full sea we now afloat;
We must take the current when it serves,
Or lose our ventures.”
The current has been served to the citizens of Pike County; we all are treading water in the full sea we now afloat. Let us not lose our ventures. Jerry Miller will lead us to a better shore.
I urge all Pike County voters to join me in voting for Jerry Miller for Pike County Commissioner.
