This week I'll highlight one room schools. The first one is Buchanan, which set at the site of now Pebble Township firehouse on Carl Penn Road near the village of Buchanan.
Thanks to several people who have loaned me old photos and information, I can spotlight several teachers and students. The photo here was loaned me by the late Edgar Givens, a former student here.
I met Edgar at the former restaurant in Waverly, Schimitt's (now partially occupied by Subway restaurant on East Emmitt Ave. in Waverly. When I was working day trick at Mead Paper in Chillicothe, I usually ate breakfast here, as did Edgar, who was on day trick at the former Wearever plant in Chillicothe.
Here is the photo Edgar "Ed" loaned me years ago. He told me the date was in the 1931 era. This one room school building was replaced in 1935 when a four-room, eight-grade school was built. My sister, Linda, brother Jerry, and I attended there. I graduated in 1952, Linda 1954, and Jerry started first grade in Sept. 1952.
Edgar couldn't identify every one in the photo, but this is his best effort.

A correction to my source of this photo: Gretchen Van Meter-Olney, now of Hilton Head, South Carolina sent this via e-mail.
She stated that Margery Ware-Van Meter was her mother. Her father was Dallas N. Vanmeter, graduate of Western High School in 1937 at Latham.
The old one-room school was moved up the hill on Carl Penn Road and I saw it from my school bus as I passed. Our janitor was a McNeal, a kind fellow.
